Overview

Transformation product (TP) identification: state of the art and novel analytical equipment is used for identification of micropollutants and their degradation products found in biological activated sludge treatment of municipal wastewater

Enzymatic pathway identification: Based on the structure comparison of parent compounds and TPs complemented with microbial enzymatic pathway databases, possible degradation pathways are postulated. Subsequently methods for the direct identification of catalytic activity and potential key enzymes in activated sludge will be developed.

Influence of treatment conditions on enzymatic activity: The impact of redox conditions, operational parameters of the activated sludge system and substrate availability on micropollutant degradation activity is studied to identify crucial parameters and possibly options for optimisation

Design of treatment processes: The feasibility of improving micropollutant degradation with optimized treatment schemes will be tested in reactor setup fed continuously with municipal wastewater. The focus of the technical application will be on centralized or decentralized municipal wastewater treatment.

Toxicology assessment: In vitro tests will applied to test the impact of degradation pathways as well as treatment schemes on water toxicity. If appropriate, the tests will be complemented with in vivo studies.

Modeling: The modeling is planned to focus a) on complementing microbial pathway databases for micropollutant degradation capability typical for activated sludge treatment and b) on understanding and controlling treatment schemes with optimized micropollutant removal.
